Athlone Library Week 2018

In celebration of Library Week, the Cape Town Museum of Childhood launched their short story writing competition and pop-up exhibition at Athlone Library on Tuesday 20 March 2018.

The Cape Town Museum of Childhood, together with the Centre for Early Childhood Development, celebrated library week at Athlone library with a pop-up exhibition and short story writing competition from 19-29 March 2018. This two week programme began with a launch event which took place at Athlone Library on Tuesday, 20 March 2018. Guest speakers at the event included Athlone Ward  councillor, Rashid Adams, inspirational young author Amr Sallie (aged 12) and Athlone-born poet David Kapp. Community members such as school teachers, their learners and representatives from NGOs within the community were also in attendance.

The aim of the Cape Town Museum of Childhood’s Library Week programme was to encourage people to visit libraries and remind them of the importance of this resource within communities; as well as to encourage a culture of story writing by giving children and youth a platform to express this creative ability. On 12 April 2018, the winner and runner up of the story writing competition were announced. Amy Carelse, a grade four learner at Eastridge Christian Academy in Mitchell’s Plain was declared the winner of the competition. Her story book was titled “Ginger” a comic book about her cat Ginger. The runner up of the competition was Ashleigh Oliver, a grade seven learner at Garlendale Primary in Athlone. Both the winner and runner up won exciting prizes which included gift vouchers from Panarottis, X2 tickets to Rush, a York Yard by Jimmy Nevis tracksuit and a book called “A girl without a sound” by Buhle Ngaba.
