Youth Day Film Festival
The Cape Town Museum of Childhood hosted its first film festival on Youth Day, 16 June 2022. The festival commemorated Youth Day, a historic day for South Africa which honours the courage of youth who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976. The film festival took place at the College of Cape Town, Crawford Campus, a stone’s throw away from where the iconic Trojan Horse Massacre occurred in 1985 where three youth were killed by apartheid security forces.
Films featured at the festival included ‘Action Kommadant’ and ‘Miseducation’ by filmmaker Nadine Angel Cloete and ‘The Wynberg 7’ and ‘Ballie Boys’ by filmmaker Professor Siona O’Connell. The festival also included a panel discussion with the filmmakers.
The aim of the festival was to educate young people about the past sacrifices of youth who fought against the Apartheid regime. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the current situation of youth in South Africa and how it has been shaped by the past.
