Child Protection Week - Silent Protest 2019

The Centre for Early Childhood Development along with the Cape Town Museum of Childhood held a silent protest on Wednesday 29 May in support of Child Protection Week. The protest took place on the corner of Klipfontein and Milner road, on the doorstep of the iconic Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

 

The silent protest was supported by representatives from The Children's Institute, Red Cross War Memorial Hospital, Department of Justice and Correctional Services, Home from Home, Department of Health, Carehaven Shelter, Ikamva Labantu, Illitha Labantu, South African Human Rights Commission, St Anne’s Home and Inclusive Education. Each representative held a poster pertaining to child protection, with phrases like “Hoot for Change”, “Stop Child Abuse” and “#BeTheChange”, to which commuters responded in solidarity with hoots, shouts and waves as they passed through the busy intersection.

 

The protesters stood together to raise awareness about the injustices against children in Cape Town and encouraged the public to embrace the “your child is my child” mantra. Pamphlets created by the Centre for Early Childhood Development on child protection (which included important contact details that children can contact when their rights are abused) along with child protection ribbons, were also handed out to the public
